Marshall Cavendish Author
Profile
Name: Philip Whiteley
DOB: 10 December 1962
Birthplace: Bradford,
West Yorkshire, UK
First job: Volunteer
residential worker, The Simon Community, north London.
Current job: Full-time
freelance author Home: Old cottage in
Ampthill, Bedfordshire
Car: Citroen C3
Favourite book: La
Peste (The Plague), Albert Camus
Favourite film: Casablanca
Favourite
music: Bob
Dylan
Favourite gadget: Still
the PC. I’m
a writer! Favourite website: Twitter,
especially for running commentary during a major live event.
Best
holiday: To
Loire Valley, France in 1970, when I was 7. Different world…
Career highlight: Launch
of How to Manage in a Flat World in September 2007, supported
by leading
business and political
figures at international video-conference.
Career lowlight: Returning
from South America in the middle of a recession in
1992 and having to do sub-editing shifts to make ends meet.
Normal
working day: I work best and most creatively
in the morning. After arranging breakfast for the
family, I work intensively
from around 8.30-11.30. Then walk the dogs and have
some lunch. I do a few extra hours in the afternoon,
often
less
intensively,
and sometimes Saturday mornings.
Downtime: Watching
movies with my wife Rose; walking in Ampthill country
park, chatting with
friends. I love playing five a side football.
Best piece
of advice: The best advice I received
was from my first editor Roy: Get the best story
and
just tell
it. Hook
the reader in
so that they find themselves reading it without
even intending to.
The most important advice I would give is that
life is not short: you get second chances, and
third,
fourth, fifth etc.
So never give up.
